*Serendipity Double Wall

Learn a foolproof method for creating cat’s head bases, then master
shaping techniques on the sides of this basket. The inside
basket – embellished with black walnut weavers - becomes a
mold for the outer wall with its black walnut and natural spokes and
weavers. Add wide paper-thin maple curls that twist in three
directions between each set of spokes, woven horizontally in as the
rows are woven rather than after rims are completed. Finish
off with side notched handles.

This double walled basket features a hardwood double-slotted base. The interior basket is space-dyed in northwest
Indian colors.
The exterior basket, woven in natural-colored reed, features a Shoshone chevronpattern of French randing bordered by
a
combination 4-rod/reverse 4-rod waling pattern, in red/orange yellow/brown. Repeat 4 rows of the waling pattern
near the top. The
challenge in this basket is in the shaping and learning to control regular and reverse 2/2 waling. Complete
with a unique 8-strand
braid at the top.

Sets of inch-wide marbled spokes are
separated by coordinating reed spokes, all dyed in gentle springtime colors. The
pre-shaped spokes, inserted into a slotted
oval hardwood base in the Nantucket fashion, ensure accurate shaping of the basket’s sides. Weave sides in an undulating
twill pattern, and complete the top with two oak side handles and waxed linen lashing.

Level: Intermediate/Advanced. Last of the “Four Seasons” series, the sides of Summertime feature undulating marbled weavers bordered by 4-rod waling done in a 2/2 pattern. The sides incorporate twining and plain weave. The double spokes feature ¼” colorful overlays (which become the rim). The unique rim is fun to make: no cut and tuck here, but rather features a modified ti-twining using the overlay spokes. Add handmade “flowers” and “curl” leaves as embellishments to complete the Summertime look.

Spokes are a combination of dyed reed and marbled strips – cut into undulating forms. The marbled rim bands are topped witha

natural reed, with black walnut splint primarily used on the
outside wall. Side “flowers” use a unique technique curled horizontally
as each row is woven. Handle is plain, stained black

class. Lashing is done in the “cable tie” technique.

Named for the designs created by the distinct vertical curls, “Ripples” features a double slotted wooden
base beginning. Black
